WeCAN, a local WCC group in Mesa County as well as a Mesa State College club, is open to all young adults in the area.

Background Information

Since forming in 2001, WeCAN members have:

  • Passed a measure at Mesa State College that designated $1 per student per semester to buy wind energy. Mesa State College has invested over $40,000 in wind energy so far.
  • Learned how to use radio equipment and produced two radio alerts that were broadcast on local stations.
  • Planned and staged a symbolic protest that was attended by local media.
  • Participated in an media training focused on energy issues.
  • Gathered and fixed 12 bikes for the borrow-a-bike program.
  • Helped students sign up for curbside recycling, and gathered more than 300 signatures on a petition asking for recycling bins on the Mesa State College campus.
  • Attended ECOnference in 2001 with 2,000 other student activists in Washington, DC.
