• "Students tap solar power" (Grand Junction Free Press 2/20/06)
• "Donations turn sun's rays into radio waves" (Nov/Dec 2005 WCC Clarion) Shell Energy pledges $20,000 to Mesa State College's solar energy project.
• "Students inspired by Bioneers" (Nov/Dec 2005 WCC Clarion) Mesa State students attend the Beaming Bioneers conference in Telluride.
• "Students energized by sun-powered radio" (Sept/Oct 2005 WCC Clarion) WeCAN members have raised over $17,000 in their campaign to have Mesa State College's radio station powered by solar energy, and is seeking additional donations.

Background Information

Since forming in 2001, WeCAN members have:

• Passed a measure at Mesa State College that designated $1 per student per semester to buy wind energy. Mesa State College has invested over $40,000 in wind energy so far.
• Learned how to use radio equipment and produced two radio alerts that were broadcast on local stations.
• Planned and staged a symbolic protest that was attended by local media.
• Participated in an media training focused on energy issues.
• Gathered and fixed 12 bikes for the borrow-a-bike program.
• Helped students sign up for curbside recycling, and gathered more than 300 signatures on a petition asking for recycling bins on the Mesa State College campus.
• Attended ECOnference in 2001 with 2,000 other student activists in Washington, DC.
